Spring Entrees at Mr. G's
The new Lenten specials at Fairlawn’s Mr. G’s Pizzeria and Wings are a sure sign of spring.

This week I had the pleasure of meeting Scott Sella, the talented floral designer and new owner of West Akron’s popular florist shop Every Blooming Thing. When Scott told me he was originally from New Jersey, I had to ask, “Have you discovered Mr. G’s Pizza?”
“Yes!” he beamed. “They actually serve an authentic New York-style pizza. I go there all the time!”
This reaction is typical of New York-area transplants who are accustomed to folding their thin-crust pizzas under the weight of fresh, meaty toppings. These are also the same people who continually ask, “What’s a sauerkraut ball?”
The pizza Jeff was raving about is Mr. G’s Pizzeria and Wings’ famous New York, New York Pizza (yes, you have to say it twice). It features freshly grated mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, extraordinarily thin crust, and the Giardina family’s secret sauce.
The 16-inch version is just $11.99.
But for the next few weeks, many area families have given up meat for Lent. And the result is a run on Mr. G’s popular non-meat pasta entrées and—on Fridays—his fish specials.
When I asked owner Mark Giardina (the “G” behind Mr. G’s) what an Italian pizza man would possibly know about fish, he rolled and eyes and gave me a geography lesson.
“Dude,” he snapped back, “where did you go to school? Italy is on the Mediterranean. My family was preparing seafood when your family was eating berries and digging up rocks for Stonehenge.”
New Seafood Entrées
Every Friday, Mr. G’s Pizzeria and Wings offers an over-the-top, all-you-can-eat fish fry, featuring delicious beer-battered cod, hushpuppies, big, thick golden french fries, and fresh cole slaw—for just $6.99. And remember, that’s all-you-can-eat.
But new to the menu this Lenten season are two affordable specials very different from traditional cod—Pan-seared Tilapia with Linguini Florentine and Fried Breaded Perch.
The Tilapia features several filets seasoned with secret spices and served over Linguini Florentine made with fresh spinach. The $12.99 price includes fresh bread.
The new Fried Perch entrée is a generous portion of breaded and fried perch filets served with your choice of spinach ravioli seasoned with garlic and butter or pierogies sautéed in freshly chopped onions. Ether way, it’s just $10.99.
Pasta and More!
Of course, you don’t have to wait until Friday to enjoy Mr. G’s completely guilt-free. The menu is filled with meatless entrées, like Spinach & Cheese Manicotti, served with traditional marinara sauce, covered in cheese and baked. The price is $12.50 and includes a crisp, fresh house salad and bread.
Or try the Eggplant Parmesan. This top-seller throughout the year features hand-breaded eggplant “fried until golden” and served over pasta with classic marinara sauce and melted cheese, $11.49.
Inspired by the sea (but not of the sea), Mr. G’s Stuffed Shells boasts cooked shells stuffed with fresh ricotta cheese then smothered in marinara and mozzarella, $12.50. Mrs. G’s Famous Gnocchi are tender potato dumplings covered with a homemade basil cream sauce, $11.99.
You may also choose the Baked Cheese Ravioli; it’s not on the menu, but Mrs. G. promises to make it for anyone who asks.
If you haven’t given up meat for Lent, Mr. G’s offers a veritable smorgasbord of entrées made with meatballs, veal, and chicken, plus a host of meaty sandwiches and salads, award-winning Buffalo wings, and pizza toppings like ham, bacon, ground beef, sausage, and, of course—pepperoni.
All dishes are available for delivery, take-out, and off-premise catering events from graduation parties to First Communion celebrations.
Ah, it is spring.
