Pass the Spaghetti!
With value-conscious specials like the new Early Bird Spaghetti Dinner or the famous Family Combo, patrons of Mr. G’s Pizzeria and Wings are enjoying more homemade Italian entrées and legendary pizza—for less dough.
By Mitch Allen
My father-in-law once bragged that he enjoyed a free meal by his own wits. A struggling, young Air Force recruit in the 1950s, he entered a diner in Alabama where he ordered a cup of hot water and a ketchup packet, plus a glass of ice water with a lemon wedge and a sugar packet. There you have it—tomato soup and lemonade.
A meal fit for a king.
“In the restaurant business we all get customers like that sometimes,” laughs Mark Giardina, founder of Mr. G’s Pizzeria and Wings in Fairlawn. “You just have to help them as best you can and hope they come back when times are better.”
Although Mr. G’s has developed a Northeast Ohio-wide reputation (and a packed dining room) for fresh, homemade Italian entrées at affordable prices, the award-winning restaurant is now introducing a new strategy aimed at diners who want to eat well and eat cheap.
It’s called the Early Bird Spaghetti Special—and you get a lot more than tomato soup and lemonade. You get a huge portion of spaghetti with Mr. G’s legendary homemade marinara sauce, a monster-sized, hand-rolled meatball, a fresh salad or a cup of homemade soup, and a fresh dinner roll, all for just $5.99, dine-in or pick-up only.
It’s one of the best dinner values in the area, but there’s a catch—you have to dine early.
“The new Early Bird special is available 4 to 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, and 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. That means you have to be seated by five o’clock to get that price, and my watch is the only watch that counts,” Mark says smiling. And don’t worry about dining that early. The portions are so large that you’ll likely be taking some home to enjoy as a late night snack.
In addition to this new special, the Giardina family is featuring its Family Combo anytime, any day. This includes a large, 18-inch one-topping pizza, a bucket of 32 spicy chicken wings, a 12-inch garlic bread, and a two-liter pop. The combo feeds four to six people for just $29.50—and they’re flying out the door now that football season is here.
“The Family Combo is perfect for watching football games on Saturday or Sunday afternoons,” Mark invites. “Or pick one up for your own tailgate party.”
Although Mr. G’s is famous for its legendary meaty pizzas and entrees, you’ll also find plenty of high protein pasta dishes for the vegetarian in your family, including Vegetarian Pizza, Calzones, Eggplant Parmesan, Lasagna, Spaghetti, White Pizza, Spinach and Cheese Manicotti, plus Mrs. G’s famous Gnocchi and more.
And if you need to feed a BIG crowd, order the Sheet Pizza—a gigantic 18x26-inch pizza for just $18. “Most pizza shops want 24 hours notice for a sheet pizza,” Mark says. “We’ll create one for you with just one hour’s notice.”
On Sundays, enjoy the All You Can Eat Spaghetti special for $6.99. This dine-in only special is available any time Sunday from noon to 10 p.m.
And if you’re the proud holder of a Mimi Press Pass, enjoy an order of fresh, hot Italian donuts free when your dine-in order totals $20 or more.
My father-in-law would be so proud.
